My Story On How I Found Myself in Data Science

Sharing This Article Won't Cost You Nothing Except Love :)

Three years ago, I did not have much knowledge of computing skills. Heck, I did not even know how to operate a simple HP laptop – and was afraid to touch computers (they might explode, haha).

It was until I finished my high school diploma that I came through a non-profit organization in my local area which was offering IT skills to young minds like myself. I joined their three months intensive training and got trained in website development, programming and graphic design skills. Within three months, I was a proud IT pro (and a confident one).

One month later, I joined campus for my degree offer in Statistics.

During my first months in campus, I did not enjoy the Stats classes. I had already developed a strong interest for tech due to my previous experience – and was more into coding than some Math theories. All this time, I had not heard nor learnt about Data Science.

So, I started doing my research on how I could get my way out of Statistics back into tech. That is when I came to know that a combination of some statistics skills and some IT skills – can lead to a career in Data Science and Analytics. This was both relieving and exciting at the same time. It took me more than 6 months of research (YouTube videos and Google searches) to understand what Data Science really is – and how I can get started.

In March 2020 however, I dived into learning Data Science (thanks to COVID lockdown). I started with Python Programming and by August the same year, I had uploaded three Data Analysis projects in my GitHub profile. I used free resources and content from the web and YouTube for my learning. Engaging in learning platforms like Kaggle and working on real-world projects accelerated my learning too.

While learning, I enjoyed the whole process by teaching and sharing with others what I learnt. And that is how I got my foot into Data Science.
