The one single fact we cannot ignore right now: is that Covid-19 had a possible long lasting impact on all living generations that we have. We are talking of the boomers, gen X, millenials, gen z. These impacts are dependent on how each of the generations grew up. As well as how they dealt with different situations or similar occurrences in their growing up.

In this article, however, we are focusing on Generation Z. What is the effect of Covid-19 on generation Z?

To answer this question, we have to narrow down and ask ourselves a little more specific questions about generation Z:

1. Who are generation Z – At what timeline were they born? What was happening during their time of birth. Do we have some remarkable events or occurrences during their time of birth that we can account for?
2. What was it like growing up as a generation Z? Their general lifestyle trend? How was the world economic trend? What about the technology trend?

1. Who are Generation Z?

Generation Z are defined to be anybody who was born between the years of 1995 and 2015. They are also often referred to as the Zoomers. Basically, this is the generation that comes after the Millenials. As of 2022, the oldest generation Z was turning 27 years old, while the youngest was turning 7.

Generation Z is known to be born at a time when almost all technological breakthroughs were happening. They are the real witnesses of the 4th Industrial Revolution. During their time of births, internet was gaining access to the world at an accelerating speed.

This is the time when all giant computers and tech companies were being launched.

3. Emergence of Covid-19

Let’s get back to their ages when Covid cracked the entire universe. At the time of Covid intrusion, the oldest Gen Z was turning 25, while the youngest was turning 5. During this time, covid forced countries into lockdowns. And the way of human interactions with the universe was redefined. Cultural norms like shaking hands became taboos, while social aspects like meeting family members became a crime. The world was new to everybody. Involuntarily, the whole world agreed to call the situation at hand, a new normal.

4. What Does It Mean for Generation Z Moving Forward?

The one conspicuous thing that all generation Z learnt during covid, is how grateful they should be to the universe and everything therein. Things don’t stop there though. Everything among generation Z is changed – their social life, personal perspectives. Even the economy they are running. Let’s break this down.

Social Life – While Generation Z is said to be the generation hooked to technology toys, this has now turned to be the generation that is more vigilant of their social interactions. They now (unlike before) cherish moments like drinking with friends in night clubs, as well as visiting their folks in the country-side.

Economic Life – While their predecessors believed more in the brick and motar economies, the generation Z is now casual in the economy they are running. Work from home is their widespread acceptable new normal. And to put it to their own words, their economy is measured by deliverables and not physical presence.

Personal Life – Generation Z is now more concerned of their personal growth. They are vigilant of things like how to strengthen their mental health – So they can deal with low moments of their life. And positively adjust faster to new normals that might arise in future.
